Market Lead in Maximum Product Display Area to Energy Consumption
Delivering a complete convenience store with a singular 2HP R744 condensing unit at a recent installation entailed 11.25mtr remote cases coupled to the condensing unit and 6.25mtr of self-contained R290 cases.
Visually, both the remote and self-contained cases look the same for maximum flexibility and a harmonised look and feel to convenience store layouts and planning.

Not only a low energy proposition, the store has an extremely low refrigerant need with just 2.2kg of R744 for the 11.25mtr of remote cases and 400g of R290 for the 6.25mtr of self-contained cases.

Congratulations to the Central England Co-operative for their Boley Park store being shortlisted in the Consumer Initiative of the Year for this year’s Grocer Awards.
Re-launched in November 2020, the store was a radical change in look and feel and re-purpose of one of the Society’s larger format stores. Pure Cold are proud to have been part of this project with the supply of refrigerated display cases.

Overview
From March 1st 2021, refrigeration equipment with a direct sales function join the list of electrical appliance product categories in the United Kingdom that reside in an energy labelling scheme. The aim is to reduce the environmental impact of energy consumption by the promotion of products that are more efficient and use less energy, thus providing end users with more transparency on making informed decisions around product performance and energy consumption to an Energy Efficiency Index (EEI).
Overhaul of Rating Scale
Energy labelling has been around for over 25 years for some predominantly domestic electrical appliances. In addition to adding refrigeration equipment with a direct sales function, the labelling scheme has had a complete overhaul which includes a new rating scale of A-G and the omission of pluses.
The simplified label is to encourage better technology by recalibrating the scale to make room for further improvements in technology as the old A+++ system of pluses could no longer show advancement clearly.
Clarity for End Users
For the first few years of the scheme it is envisaged that classes A-B for commercial refrigeration will be virtually empty since they refer to the ideal efficiency thresholds to aspire to but not necessarily be available today.

As we continue to set the industry standard on display case efficiencies we hope the scheme provides better clarity for food retail store operators to make informed decisions around display case product performance and energy efficiency.
First new store of 2021
We were proud to recently support our client The Central England Co-operative with the supply of frozen food and medium temperature refrigerated cases to their first new store launch of 2021.
It is yet another great looking store led by new product lines and underpinned by innovative energy efficiency measures.
Sub-150 GWP refrigerants
With a load of 20kW MT and 3kW LT, the store’s refrigeration needs are fulfilled by a DX system utilising the A2L refrigerant R454c. First trialed by the Society in late 2019, The Central England Co-operative was the first retailer in the world to utilise sub-150GWP A2L refrigerants in a remote system for their store refrigeration needs. This has now been successfully transitioned into ‘business as usual’ as their standard refrigeration solution.
Omni-Channel Retail Space
We were proud to recently support our client Waitrose with the supply of frozen food cases to a Customer Fulfilment Centre in the London area for online delivery.
With a total connected load of 65kW evaporating at -27C and 144 doors it is also one of our larger frozen food case installations to date.
A Natural Refrigerant Solution
With our first foray into the online fulfilment world it was also great to migrate transcritical CO2 out of our usual home of food retail stores. Hopefully the start of many more installations in the ever evolving omni-channel retail space.
Re-inventing How Convenience Stores can be Delivered
Our Impact case is changing perceptions and enabling air-cooled self-contained cases to be the winning profile on ‘Total Cost of Ownership’ across the board in comparison to remote systems by encompassing a reduction in capital expenditure and construction time, reduced maintenance events and reduction in refrigerant used.
The biggest fundamental shift with this recently launched product is around energy profile. Historically energy (and intrinsically linked high heat rejection values) was where the operational expenditure profile was unfavourable. Not anymore!
New Benchmark in Energy Performance
At an energy profile of just 10kW/day for a 2500mm Impact multideck to ISO3 (25 C / 60% RH) conditions and M0 (+1/+4 C) product temperature this is a new benchmark in energy performance. In comparison, 2500mm self-contained multipacks being provided to convenience stores fifteen years ago would typically be an energy profile per day of 45kW. On a remodel, that is an energy saving of £1,533 a year at 12p/kW/hr by removing one 15 year old 2500mm case and replacing with the Impact case.
NB. In store energy monitoring and lab testing in ISO0 (typical store condition) have both revealed an energy profile of 8kW/day for a 2500mm case.
Simplicity is Best
Utilising R290, the Impact multideck is a single circuit design to a 2500mm multideck with a 150g refrigerant charge. We are excited about the year ahead and continuing to push this product’s reach into the UK convenience sector by re-inventing the Total Cost of Ownership profile on both new construction and remodel schemes.
Re-invention of Existing Space
Boley Park relaunched in November 2020. The store is one of several remodels of existing larger stores and the introduction of a number of new in-store services. Pure Cold refrigerated display cases also got a new and look and feel have with an exterior black colour which enables the products within to really pop on the shelves with state of the art lighting.
Low GWP refrigeration is “Business As Usual”
Following the successful introduction of a new refrigeration system architecture utilising sub-150GWP A2L refrigerants in a DX system in late 2019, Boley Park is also using this system which is now standard build for The Central England Co-operative. The Pure Cold MDD doored multideck cases are the lowest duty rated cases available on the market playing a part in making this remodel a significant reduction in energy to the previous system installed.

Significantly reducing carbon footprint by replacing old fridges
We were delighted to commence supply of our convenience range of remote refrigerated display cases to The Heart of England Co-operative in late 2019. Significantly reducing the carbon footprint of it’s refrigeration assets has been one of the big wins with a 85% energy reduction on the assets being replaced to date.
Communicating Sustainability
The Heart of England Co-operative likes to share sustainability messaging and initiatives with it’s community and it was a pleasure to quantify the carbon savings into practical scenarios, in this instance, the carbon equivalent in typical family cars being taken off the road every year by replacing old fixtures with Pure Cold’s MDD Door Multideck cases.
Store Impact
The cases also add a great visual impact to the store particularly the ability to merchandise wine bottle x 5 high within a standard height case.
